Canes fall in region tourney final; Dyer scores 1000th point

The Cartersville High boys basketball team lost the Region 5-AAAA championship game Saturday night at state-ranked No. 2 Sandy Creek, 78-64.

The loss will make the Canes a 2-seed in the state tournament. Cartersville will host the first round against a 3-seed, Madison County, at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sandy Creek, a title contender in Class 4A, beat Cedartown by 64 points on Friday in the region tournament semifinals, but the Patriots had a much tougher time with the Canes on Saturday. Sandy Creek led 38-34 at halftime before earning some breathing room at the end of the third quarter and making the score 59-47.

Senior Perignon Dyer reached the 1,000-point mark for his career in the game. Dyer finished with a team-high 22 points, while Kolbe Benham added 14.

Cartersville will enter the state tournament with a 15-13 overall record on the season.
