Cass, Cartersville running backs place first at SE Whitfield Invitational

Three Bartow County track and field teams participated in the Southeast Whitfield Invitational in Dalton Saturday. Out of 12 teams, the Cass boys placed third, Cartersville placed eighth and Adairsville finished 12th. For the girls, Cass placed fifth, Cartersville placed ninth and Adairsville placed 11th. A few football running backs took first in some of the sprints. Cass’ Terry Berdin placed first in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds, and a fellow slotback on the Colonels’ football team, Laizon West, placed fourth with a time of 11.27 seconds. West also placed fourth in the high jump. With West and Berdin, the Cass boys placed first in the 4x100-meter relay, less than three seconds ahead of the Cartersville relay team, which placed fourth. In addition to Beardin’s first place and the first in the 4x100 relay, Colonel Ray Varnum placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.43 seconds, and first in the triple jump with a distance of 39 feet, 11 inches. Varnum also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 9 inches. Cass wide receiver Devin Pritchett had another high finish for the Colonels as he placed second in the high jump with a height of 6 feet. Meanwhile, the Adairsville football team’s expert long snapper, Jacob Potter, translated his skills on the gridiron to a third-place finish in the discus throw. Cartersville’s own speedy running back, Trey Creamer, placed first with a time of 52.84 seconds in the 400-meter dash. In addition, Creamer had two second-place finishes. He finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.20 seconds and second in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 0.5 inches. Bree Cole was the top Lady Cane with two second-place finishes as she ran the 800 in a time of 2:36.13 and the 1600 in a time of 5:40.62. Second-place finishers for Cass included Lady Colonels Kyler Trouten and Hayley Gildersleeve. Trouten placed second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 10.25 inches. She also placed third in the pole vault with a height of 7 feet, 6 inches. Gildersleeve placed second in the shot put with a distance of 38 feet, 6.5 inches. Teammate Channel Clemons placed third in the shot put with a distance of 36 feet, 7 inches. Other strong finishes for Cass included Sabrina Buggs. She placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13:59 seconds. She also placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 11 inches. Buggs and the 4x100-meter relay team placed third with a time of 53.29 seconds. Fellow Lady Colonel Hillary McCarver placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.63 seconds. Sydney Mays also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.13 seconds. For the Cass boys, Diunte Ward was another Colonel with a strong finish as he placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 8 inches. For the Lady Canes, Grace Cochran placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.58, and Briyana Greyling placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 56.66 seconds. The Lady Canes’ 4x100 relay team placed fourth with a time of 54.09 seconds, while the 4x400 relay team placed fourth with a time if 4:41.88. For the Lady Tigers, Hayley Pittman stood out as she placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.
