Featured throughout "Christmas Memories by Candlelight," Truman Capote's childhood memoir of making fruitcake with his elderly cousin will take center stage at the 1902 Stock Exchange & Public Square Opera House. Along with the dramatic interpretation, the holiday presentation will showcase musical performances at the Adairsville venue, 124 Public Square.
"Capote’s 'A Christmas Memory' is such a beautiful and moving story, and to be completely honest I take any opportunity to work with Kim Knight, [artistic director for the 1902 Stock Exchange & Public Square Opera House]," said Shannon Alanna Adams, who is a freshman at Columbus State University studying theater. "Having the opportunity to play Friend has been so much fun. She’s an older woman with a youthful spirit and a deep love for her cousin — and close friend — Buddy."
Along with Adams, the play’s two-member cast will feature another Columbus State University student — Will Bradley who will portray Buddy.
“'Christmas Memories by Candlelight' is a mixture of both music and dramatic interpretation," Adams said. "Christmas is a time where we rejoice in the now and share many fond memories of the past.
"We hope to help spark some of those memories with the shows at the 1902 this year. Though the music each weekend may vary, the dramatic interpretations are taken from Truman Capote’s 'A Christmas Memory.' Yes, I think audiences of all ages will enjoy the show."
Opening Friday, “Christmas Memories by Candlelight” will continue Dec. 8, 14 and 15. Each offering will start with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the show at 8 p.m.
"The first weekend, audiences will hear Christmas selections by the Wildfire Jazz Ensemble and Caminetto Musicale Girls Ensemble under the direction of Sonoraville High School Choral and Drama Director Hannah Nelson," Knight said. "The second weekend, audiences will hear selections by Tonal Combustion under the direction of Gordon Central High School Choral and Drama Director Dr. Kim Watters.
"These groups are audition groups who perform throughout the year at many social, school and church events. The 1902 is honored to have them as their featured guests for this year's dinner theater. Audience members will venture down [a] different memory lane with each performed selection as well as have their spirits uplifted. All will leave inspired to spread the true meaning of Christmas."
Tickets for “Christmas Memories by Candlelight” are $50 plus tax, which includes dinner and the performance. Reservations are required and can be placed by calling 770-773-1902.
