Dorothy Giles Mazih, known as “Dody,” passed away May 3, 2018, at her home in Rydal, Georgia, surrounded by her loving family.
Dody was born December 28, 1933, in Atlanta, the second child of the late Arthur and Irene Giles. As the eldest daughter, she helped her mother raise her three younger sisters. She attended Avondale High School.
In 1953, she was visiting her brother, Paul, and his wife Doris in Alameda, California, where he was stationed in the Navy, when they introduced her to the love of her life, Sam Mazih. They were married on March 5, 1954, in Alameda, and were together until his passing on November 27, 2007. After her marriage, Dody converted to the Catholic faith and was active in several churches through the years, serving as CCD teacher, vacation bible school teacher, and treasury assistant. At the time of her passing, she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rome, Georgia.
Sam and Dody raised eight children and made their home in Doraville, Georgia. Over the years, Dody worked as a switchboard operator, at a beauty salon, and as a seamstress, all while keeping her role as a full-time mother and loving wife as her top priority. She was very active in her children’s school as a volunteer, serving as a room mother, clinic worker, library assistant, and PTA member.
Dody also enjoyed many activities with her husband including bowling and couple’s country and western competition dancing, winning many awards and teaching dance lessons. She was an avid reader and loved history, taking many trips around the south to explore historical sites she had read about and stopping to enjoy a good restaurant along the way. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with her family playing games, and it was well known that everything stopped when it was time for "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy."
A very involved grandmother and great-grandmother, Dody helped care for many of them from their infancy, until her passing.
In addition to her parents, Dody was reunited in heaven with her husband, Sam; a son, Christopher; and her brother, Paul. She is survived by sons Joe (Judie) and Sam (Melody), and daughters Julie Mazih Cantrell (Victor), Toni Mazih Adams (Brian), Gina Mazih Dean (David), Laura Mazih Purdue (Eric), and Michele Mazih Felts; grandchildren Helen (Travis), Crystal (Isaac), Joey (Jenny), Michael (Stefanie), Hannah, Amanda (Michael), David (Julie), Jaimi (Warren), Brandon (Natalie), Tori, John, Jeffrey, Eric Jr., John “Louie” (Nika), Vanessa (Trevor), Adam (Chelcia), Ashley, Eli, and Alex, and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Martha Thompson, Alice Ramseur, and Sherrie Sapp.
A memorial service was held Saturday, May 5, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rome, Georgia. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Dody to The American Cancer Society.
