DTN takes home 27 awards in GPA Better Newspaper Contest

The Daily Tribune News took home 27 awards, including a general excellence award, in the Georgia Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest for 2019.

The Daily Tribune News placed third in the General Excellence category in Circulation Division C and was awarded first place in the Best Sports Section or Pages category.

Winners in the Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest were honored for their outstanding achievements in newspaper journalism. Entries were judged in seven divisions based on circulation.

Judging for the contest was performed by the South Carolina Press Association. A total of 80 newspapers entered at least one category in this year’s contest.

Sixteen of the awards The Daily Tribune News received were presented for editorial accomplishments and 11 were presented for advertising.

In addition to the first place in the Sports Section or Pages category, photographer Randy Parker was awarded first place in the News Photograph category, as well as third place in the Feature Photograph category and third place in the Sports Photograph category.

Managing editor Jason Greenberg also took first place in the Sports Feature Story category, first place in the Sports Coverage category and third place in the Page Design category.

Greenberg and reporter James Swift combined to earn third place in Headline Writing.

In addition to the shared award, Swift was honored with four second-place awards, including the categories of Humorous Column, Business Writing, Spot News Photo and Best Magazine Story.

Education reporter Donna Harris also received two awards in the categories of Education Writing (third place) and Feature Writing (second place).

Sports reporter Nicholas Sullivan was named a second-place recipient in the Sports Feature Story category, and he was a part of the sports team along with Greenberg and Parker that was awarded first place in the Best Sports Section or Pages category.

The Daily Tribune News’ advertising team of Jennifer Moates and Susan Dodd also earned 11 awards in the advertising contest, including: first and third place in the full Color Ad category; second and third place in the Motor Vehicle category; first place in the Newspaper Promotion Out of Print category; first place in Real Estate; first and third place in Service-Institutional; second and third place in Signature Page; and third place in Non-Traditional.
