EVHS sponsoring event about Mattie Lee Price

The Etowah Valley Historical Society is sponsoring an event about the historically famous Mattie Lee Price from Stilesboro Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Stiles Auditorium in the old Cherokee School building at 320 W. Cherokee Ave. in Cartersville.

According to the Texas author, Price was 14 when her father put her on stage at the Stilesboro Academy and was just 29 when she died in London while with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. She also was considered to be “pretty special” by illusionist Harry Houdini, who mentioned her in all of his books.

“[Dicksson] has written a book on an 1880s young woman — Mattie Lee Price — who became a Vaudeville stage act, touring the United States [and] Europe, and performed for a time with Harry Houdini,” EVHS Vice President Joe Head said. “This is a very interesting story and reveals a new Bartow personality that has been forgotten to our history.”

All proceeds from book sales will benefit EVHS.

The event is free and open to the public.
