Gail Key Porter

Gail Key Porter, age 53, departed this life far too soon on September 11, 2018, after a brave nine-year battle with cancer. She was the seventh and youngest daughter of the late James Ernest Key and the late Cellie Drummond Key, born on May 11, 1965 in Marietta, Georgia, joining sisters the late Sarah Ann Key Porter, Joan Key Hill, the late Janice Key, Shelia Key Dean, the late Donna Marie Phillips, and Pam Key Millsapp. She graduated from Marietta High School and faithfully worked at Shaw Industries for over 20 years.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years Virgil DeWayne Porter,  her daughters April Porter Brown and Brooke Porter Freeman, sons-in-law Jacob Brown and Caleb Freeman, her sisters Joan, Shelia, and Pam, brothers-in-law Billy Hill, Johnny Dean, and Floyd Millsapp, mother-in-law Carolyn Whitmire, and six nephews and one niece. Gail loved being around children, especially Tasia Richards, PJ Richards, Kairi Mohon, and Raelynn Mohon, all of whom she considered her grandchildren and all of whom adored her.

When Gail laughed, the whole room knew it, and it was contagious — you couldn’t help but laugh when Gail did. She loved traveling to the mountains and the beach with her family, enjoyed attending classic car shows, and her affection for Krispy Kreme’s lemon-filled doughnuts was unmatched. Some of her favorite trips were with her daughters and her sisters, who made it a priority to travel together at least once a year. The laughter began as soon as the Key sisters piled into the car for their “Sister Trip,” and the inside jokes they shared are too numerous to mention. Her nephews and nieces looked forward to going to her house for family gatherings, where good food and fun awaited. Gail’s love for her family will always be cherished, and the courage and strength she showed throughout her health battle will serve as an inspiration for all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at New Canaan Baptist Church with Mark Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Thursday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Mrs. Porter will be carried to the church on Friday to lie-in-state from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour.
