Irby’s double-double highlights college basketball action


The college basketball season continues for former Bartow County high school players.

In boys action, Cartersville native Adrian Rodgers is having a big season at the Division I level, while former Excel teammates Elijah Robinson and Rudy Winters are contributing to their college teams as well.


Elijah Robinson (Emmanuel Jr., Excel) — Robinson came off the bench and played 15 minutes Saturday in a 19-point win over Barton at home. He scored eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line with five rebounds. Robinson is averaging 9.4 points in 20.5 minutes per game this season on 49.6 percent shooting from the field while averaging five rebounds per game.

Adrian Rodgers (Southern Sr., Centennial) — Cartersville native Adrian Rodgers is having a big senior season for Southern University. He is averaging 16.5 points and five rebounds in 31.9 minutes per game for the 18-8 Southern Jaguars. Southern is 10-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, good for second place. Rodgers scored a career high 30 points on 8-of-14 shooting for Southern in its 79-66 road win at Grambling Saturday night.

Rudy Winters (Dalton State So., Excel) — Winters and Dalton State defeated Coastal Georgia, 67-60, Feb. 11 on the road. Winters logged 21 minutes and scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field with an assist. For the season, Winters is averaging 13.5 points in 22.4 minutes per game on 49 percent shooting from the field, adding three rebounds per game.


Sydney Boyd (Brewton-Parker Fr., Woodland) — Boyd played one of Brewton-Parker’s two games last week. On Thursday, she played 10 minutes, scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and added one steal in a loss. For the season, Boyd is averaging 4.3 points per game.

Marissa Dubose (Gadsden State So, Woodland) — Gadsden State picked up two wins in the last few days, one against Lawson State Thursday and another against Roane State Monday. Dubose grabbed a rebound Thursday and recorded a rebound and an assist Monday.

Kaelyn Irby (Gadsden State So., Cartersville) — Irby had two big games in Gadsden State’s wins. She scored 14 points with 10 assists, four rebounds and two steals while shooting 6-of-11 from the field in Thursday’s game. She then scored 20 points with three 3s, six rebounds, four steals and three assists Monday. She is averaging 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and two steals per game this season.

Morgan Jones (Gadsden State So, Cartersville) — Morgan Jones continues to start for Gadsden State and be a presence on the boards. She had eight rebounds with two steals Thursday, and had five rebounds and an assist Monday. Jones is averaging 4.6 rebounds per game on the year.

Maya Jones (Gadsden State So, Cartersville) — Jones saw action in both Thursday’s and Monday’s game. She got in the box score with an assist Monday.
