Today we celebrate the homecoming of our father, Leland Harvey Thompson, 91, of Emerson, GA.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Thompson.
Leland was born in Marble, NC. He worked for the railroad before working for Lockhead for 35 years. He loved coaching baseball and football for 20 years. He was a volunteer fireman in Emerson. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many beautiful items. He belonged to Emerson Baptist Church and anyone who knew him, loved him. He was a wonderful parent, loved the Lord, and his family. Leland served in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII.
He leaves behind his son, Michael Thompsom, and two daughters: Barbara Cantrell and Cindy Harvell, all of Cartersville, GA; seven grandsons: Phillip (Kim) Cantrell, Corey (Alisha) Fox, Daniel Marks Marine Staff Seargent, Robert (Laurie) Harvell of Pennsecola, FL, Marine Seargent Dakota (Megan) Harvell of Okinawa, Japan, Chase and Blake Thompson; one granddaughter, Kristin Thompson; and 11 great grandchildren to cherish his memory. Sisters Betty Wallace and June Stephens also survive.
A graveside service will be conducted Friday, May 31, 2019, at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA, at one thirty in the afternoon with military honors presented.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home, Friday, May 31, 2019, from eleven thirty in the morning until twelve thirty in the afternoon.
