Sammy Cooley, 61, of Decatur, Georgia, formerly of Cartersville, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018. Funeral Service will be Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 1:00 P.M. at Alexander Chapel Church. He will be laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends Friday, April 27, 2018, from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Sammy was born on May 21, 1956, in Cartersville, Georgia, to the late Mary Frances (Benham) and Robert Lee Cooley. He was one of seven children that grew up and lived in Cartersville most of his life. He attended Faith Temple COGIC and Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from Cartersville High School and enlisted in the US Army. Upon his return to Cartersville, Sammy worked for Cartersville Undergarment until his retirement. Sammy later moved to Decatur, Georgia, where he lived the rest of his days on this earth.
Sammy loved sports. He met his wife, Laura (Wilson) Cooley, when she was admiring his skills on the basketball court. Sammy and Laura share three sons: Reco, Sammy “Monte,” Jr., and Tron.
Sammy had a great sense of humor and was loved by all who knew him. On April 23, 2018, God called Sammy home to his reward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Frances and Robert Lee Cooley and sister, Regina (Lopy) Gamble.
Left to cherish his memory are: wife, Laura; children, Reco Wilson, Monte (Emily) Cooley of Durham, North Carolina, and Tron Cooley; grandchildren, Sammy III, Audriana, and Alivia Cooley; siblings, Rose Mary Shuman, Calvin (Glenda) Cooley, Jo Ellen (Johnny) Paige, Robert (Felicia) Cooley and, Jimmy Cooley; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
