Woodland boys duo, Cass' Surcey selected to all-region tennis team

The all-Region 7-AAAAA boys and girls tennis teams were dominated by selections from Carrollton and Kell, understandably so since three of their four teams reached at least the Class 5A state semifinals.

Well, the remainder of the teams was made up of three Bartow County standouts, as announced Wednesday.

On the boys side, Woodland's Bryce VanOrder garnered first-team selection, while teammate Connor Gunnell earned a spot on the second team. The pair of juniors were arguably the top 1-2 punch in the region, often cruising to singles victories on lines 1 and 2, respectively. They each finished the season with a 16-2 record.

Cass sophomore Emily Surcey proved to be the only non-Trojan or non-Longhorn on the girls side, landing a spot on the second-team. Surcey wrapped up the year with a 7-1 record in region action with her only loss coming against a Kell program that finished as state runner-up for the second consecutive season.

With all three players set to return next year, each seems likely to retain a spot on the all-region squad.

NOTE: Coaches from Region 6-AAA and Region 5-AAAA — the leagues for Adairsville and Cartersville, respectively — don't vote for an all-region team.
