A man authorities say was involved in a late Sunday burglary was shot and killed by a police officer after allegedly attacking one of the officers responding to the incident.

According to a news release from Chief Thomas N. Culpepper of the Cartersville Police Department, officers about 11:30 p.m. Sunday responded to a burglary in progress call at Schnitzer Recycling, 301 Industrial Park Road.

As officers arrived they encountered two suspects, Steven Haynes Clark and Joseph Adam Bowlen. Clark attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended, while Bowlen allegedly attacked one of the responding officers. The officer shot Bowlen, who was transported by life flight to Grady Hospital, where he later died.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an investigation into the shooting.

Clark, 31, of 142 Cass Pine Log Road, White, has been charged with forced entry burglary, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.
