According to a news release from Chief Thomas N. Culpepper of the Cartersville Police Department, officers about 11:30 p.m. Sunday responded to a burglary in progress call at Schnitzer Recycling, 301 Industrial Park Road.
As officers arrived they encountered two suspects, Steven Haynes Clark and Joseph Adam Bowlen. Clark attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended, while Bowlen allegedly attacked one of the responding officers. The officer shot Bowlen, who was transported by life flight to Grady Hospital, where he later died.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an investigation into the shooting.
Clark, 31, of 142 Cass Pine Log Road, White, has been charged with forced entry burglary, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.
Capt. Frank Cline refused further comment pending GBI investigation.
Adairsville man facing marijuana distribution charges
Adairsville police officers Saturday arrested a local man on drug charges after investigating his suspicious behavior.
According to APD Chief Charles Stafford, officers investigated 30-year-old Deangelo Dee Buckner after seeing him walk down the street in the early morning hours that day. They searched his person and found in his pockets 20 individually packed doses of marijuana.
Buckner, 251 B. Lawrence St., Adairsville, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana. He was was being held at the Bartow County Jail pending bond.
Both Bartow and Cartersville fire departments reported working no fires in the 24-hours prior to 6 p.m. Monday.
