The Bartow County 8-and-under all stars had a healthy dose of offense -- when they weren't putting the ball on the ground so often -- but not nearly enough defense as they came up on the short end of a 40-12 score against Gordon County on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the county recreation department's 10-and-under team won 34-16 against Dalton and its 12-and-under squad took an 85-0 victory in Gordon County.

The three recreation all-star teams are participating in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Authority District 5 playoffs.

All three teams will play again this weekend in Bartow County.

Gordon 40, Bartow 12

The 8-and-under and 10-and-under teams played their games under the lights at Cass High School's Earl Cunningham Stadium.

The playing field was abbreviated to just 80 yards in length for the contests, which come at the conclusion of the rec league's regular football seasons in Northwest Georgia as well as across the state.

Gordon scored the first three touchdowns of the night, from 5, 18 and 6 yards out, staking it to a 20-0 lead with 1:16 left in the first half.

Bartow, which had hurt its cause in the early going with two fumbles, came roaring back from that deficit on a 60-yard run by Jordan Ford.

The PAT was no good but the home team had closed the margin to 20-6 with just 1:16 left in the first half.

Unfortunately for Bartow, Gordon had some speed to burn as well and covered 80 yards in two plays. The first play took the ball to the Bartow 31 from Gordon's 20. The next play earned the visitors' fourth touchdown of the evening, as they seized a commanding 27-6 lead that was carried into halftime.

Bartow showed more defensive muscle in the third quarter, holding Gordon scoreless for those eight minutes.

It was not until almost midway of the final period that the visitors added their fifth touchdown of the evening on a 5-yard run.

This time the PAT was successful and Gordon was up 34-6 with 5:40 remaining in the game.

Bartow made 14 yards in four plays, then Ford dialed up another long distance gainer, picking up 45 yards before being tackled at the 1.

Bartow scored the next play and pulled to 34-12.

Gordon answered even quicker, though, on a 60-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead to 40-12 with 2:04 remaining. The PAT was no good and Bartow was unable to muster up another touchdown before the clock ran out.

Bartow 34, Dalton 16

Bartow's 10-and-under team had more success on the evening however, and it jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Dalton answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion to close to 14-8.

Bartow responded with a quick drive that started well into the first quarter and closed one play into the second quarter, giving them a 20-8 lead.

Bartow added another touchdown before halftime, leading at the break 28-8.

Dalton came back in the third quarter to score another touchdown and moved to 28-16 after making its second two-point conversion.

Bartow iced the game in the final quarter with yet another touchdown, accounting for the last score and giving the home team a 34-16 victory.

Jared Reed led the Bartow all-stars with two touchdowns, one of 30 yards and the second from 20 yards away.

Ethan Carter added a 43-yard touchdown while Braylin Bray tallied one that started from 15 yards out, and McLin Shaw put the final touchdown of the evening on the scoreboard with an 18-yard effort.
