Bartow County Recreation Department teams added to their trophy collection with a pair of district championships on Saturday.

The 12-and-under football all stars defeated Calhoun 14-6 at Calhoun to claim the GRPA District 5 Title, and the under-8 soccer all stars handily defeated Cedartown 7-1 at Hamilton Crossing to take the inaugural GRPA District 5 Championship.

Football play

In football action, Bartow and Calhoun engaged in a defensive struggle, with neither cracking the goal line in the first half.

Bartow got the breakthrough it needed with the first possession of the second half. It drove down the field and Jacob Wilson scored from 1 yard out to take a 6-0 lead. Trevor Lowe added the PAT to extend the lead to 8-0.

Wilson struck again on the opening drive of the fourth quarter, scoring from 9 yards out to go up 14-0. The PAT was missed.

Calhoun scored late and closed to 14-6, but time ran out on the host team and Bartow claimed the district title. Wilson was named tournament MVP.

The Bartow All Stars will play in the GRPA State Football Playoffs on Dec. 4 in Americus against the District 6 representative.

Soccer victory

In soccer action, the Bartow all stars jumped quickly on Cedartown and never looked back in its 7-1 victory to claim the GRPA District 5 title.

Emmanuel Lopez netted four goals to lead Bartow, Matt Shook scored twice and Peyton Posey also scored.

Bartow outscored its opponents 27-1 in three games. The win concluded the season for the Under 8 Soccer All Stars.

Bartow County recreation teams claimed three of the eight available district titles in GRPA Youth Sports available this fall.

In other weekend action involving local football all-star teams, Cartersville Parks and Recreation squads lost to Murray County in the 8-and-under football championship.

The program's 10-and-under all-star team was defeated 24-0 by the Whitfield County all-star team in their football championship game.
