During Monday's Emerson City Council meeting, Police Chief Stan Bradley approached the council about petitioning Bartow County to rename the section of Old Alabama Road within the city.
According to Bradley, the intersection near South Central Middle School is confusing not only for emergency dispatchers but for police and the state as well. Three named Old Alabama roads intersect in front of the school.
The police chief said the potential for problems has led to the department temporarily renaming the new portion of Old Alabama Road as State Route 1000 for reporting purposes. Future plans call for that section to become State Route 113, which will connect Rockmart/Cartersville Highway with Interstate 75.
The council approved the measure to draw up a resolution for renaming the section, with the council laughingly suggesting that the new name not contain "Old Alabama."
In other business, the council:
* Recognized Bill Popham for 37 years of providing "Christmas joy" to the city.
* Heard from a representative of the Joy Foundation, which presented $1,000 to Bradley for Emerson's Shop With A Cop program taking place Saturday.
* Approved changes to the planning and zoning by-laws.
* Approved changes to the hotel/motel tax ordinance with the understanding that amendments could be made in the future.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at city hall.
