The Woodland High girls soccer players know something about scoring in the classroom as well as on the soccer field.

The Lady Wildcats have been named a 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team.

This is the third year in a row the students have received the honor, head coach Kyle Morgan said.

To earn the honor, Morgan said, teams had to have a minimum 3.25 GPA. The award is based on the students' grades for the entire school year.

Woodland's team had a 3.5 GPA and it is one of approximately 10 schools in the state to receive the honor.

"This is a great example of 'student athletes' being successful on the field and in the classroom," Morgan said. "It's quite an honor."

He credits the achievement to the students, their parents, school teachers and coaches.

"It has a direct connection to the hard work the students put in the classroom and on the soccer field," he said. "It's the kids, teachers, parents and coaches working together.

"For the most part, the kids and their parents do the work. We just try to make sure they do what they need to do."

He said the coaches also emphasize the importance of academic achievement, and players see the tradition of high academics in those who went before them and try to help carry it on.

He said the emphasis is even carried through at the soccer banquet, adding the only individual award given is to the student with the highest grade.

Johannah Nunez was the recipient of that award the past year, as a 10th-grader.

"The students who come in to our program are expected to achieve at a certain level, both in the classroom and on the soccer field," he said. "It's a credit to them for understanding the importance of academics and how that will correlate to their success, no matter what path they choose after they leave high school."

Members of the team the past year included: Kylie Janusek, Lexi Katt, Lindsay Roach, Jessica Vasquez, Lauren Zarefoss, Desiree Putnam, Alexis Velasquez, Whitney Waits, Emma Hicks, Stephanie Hicks, Hannah Lively, Nunez, Kelsey Clifton, Malory Dempsey, Amber Fuller, Sara Garrett, Jessa Jones, Mckensy Kudary, Emily Moore, Hailie Parshall, Mallory Rosiek and Ana Steiger.
