Cartersville High's girls basketball team earned its first region win of the season Friday night with a 75-44 drubbing of host Cedartown.

The Lady Purple Hurricanes entered the second quarter down by one point, 15-14, but began to seize control of the game.

Cartersville led 25-23 at halftime and continued its surge in the third quarter.

"We made a good run [in the second quarter], got control of the ball game at that point [and] came back out [in] the third quarter and tried to pick up where we left off," Lady Canes coach Donna Enis said.

Cartersville outscored the Lady Bulldogs 29-12 in the third and led 54-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

Junior Adrienne Green led the Lady Canes with 22 points, Kaelyn Irby added 16, D'Yasmine Richards chipped in with 10, Kea Garnigan scored 8, Stefanie Will had 6, Carlee Bragg totaled 3 and April Gary and Maya Jones each contributed 2 points.

While Cartersville got its usual scoring punch from freshman point guard Irby, Enis lauded her team's balance offensively.

"Kaelyn, as always, is productive offensively and she just really passed the ball. She was really, really unselfish," the Lady Canes coach said. "Adrienne Green just had a breakthrough night, kind of like she had last [season]. ... She became the dominating inside player that we've needed."

The coach also had praise for her freshmen class, which grew by one Friday as Jones was called up to play varsity.

"We played five freshmen during the ball game so we're getting a lot of production from them," Enis said. "When you got nine people scoring, you're getting a lot of balance."

Cartersville (7-6, 1-0 Region 7B-AAA) plays Tuesday at Gilmer. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
