NeSmith DLMS hosts event in Cartersville

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will host its annual awards banquet this weekend in Cartersville, with about 200 people expected to attend.

The banquet, which will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel at 499 East Main St. beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, will honor the Top 10 drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Tour and the Top 3 drivers in the two Weekly Racing Series Regions.

Other awards that will be presented include the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award, the GM Performance Parts Hard Charger of the Year Award, The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Promoter of the Year Award and the NeSmith Chevrolet Chassis Manufacturer of the Year Award.

Eric Cooley of Fulton, Miss., will pick up $20,000 out of the $50,000 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point fund for winning his second straight series championship. The 19-year-old driver had two wins, 14 Top 5 finishes, 21 Top 10 finishes, and one fast time in 21 starts driving the 78 Towing and Recovery Special.

"Cool Whip" also was the only driver during the 2010 season to complete all 975 laps of NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series competition on the National Tour. Cooley's season earnings, including his point fund check, totaled $38,625.

Larry Harrod of Plains, will receive the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award and a check for $5,000. Harrod finished fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point standings with two wins, seven top fives, 11 top 10s and one fast time in 20 starts driving the Harrod Logging Special.

With the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award and a check for $4,500 out of the National point fund, "The Big Tree" earned $24,595 during the season.

Johnny Stokes of Columbus, Miss., will be honored as the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion after posting 13 wins, 28 top fives, and 30 top 10s in 33 starts driving the TJC Mortgage/Maximum Signs and Graphics GRT.

Stokes was also the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model Champion at Columbus Speedway and Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss.

"Dr. Dirt" will also pick up a $1,000 check for finishing tenth in the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National point standings where he had one win, five top fives, seven top 10, and two fast times in 12 starts.

Chase Edge of Lafayette, Ala., will be honored as the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion after turning in six wins, 28 top fives, and 30 top 10s in 31 starts driving the Edge's Gas Company Special.
