Cass High's tennis teams have opened their seasons with two straight victories with their defeat of East Paulding at Hamilton Crossing Park on Wednesday.

"It's always a good day when two of your tennis players get their first varsity wins," head coach Chris Allen said, adding the wins were notched by Hannah Howard and Lauren Simonson.

The Cass boys won their matches, 4-1, with Jake Barnette leading the way in singles, 6-0 and 6-0, Jeremy Coone winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5; and Joey Johnson also netting a win at 6-1, 6-0.

In boys doubles, Sean Lipinski and Kaleb McBrayer won 6-1, 6-1.

The Cass girls won their matches, 3-2, with Howard taking a hard-fought victory, 6-7, 7-5, 7-5, and Simonson, 6-3, 6-2.

Emily Heater and Hannah Delia won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The victories make both teams 2-0.

"It's always good to start with a couple of wins," coach Allen said. "The reality is this really is just an extension of our preseason. It's all aimed at getting us ready for our region play."

The coach said the Cass teams are progressing but need to keep working to improve.

"We're not where we need to be," he said, "but I can safely say we're on pace with where we expect to be. There's still a lot of things up in the air but the big thing is we're on track."

Cass returns to the tennis courts today, hosting Cedartown at Hamilton Crossing. The matches start around 4:45 p.m.
