Darlington overpowered Excel's boys and girls high school tennis teams 5-0 Monday.

"I felt like the kids played well, but the girls and boys from Darlington just play more tennis and at least six to eight of their players participate in USTA tournaments during the summer," head coach Mark Hibbard said.

In boys tennis, Stephen Barton lost at the No. 1 singles position 6-0, 6-0, while La Chaz Phillips fell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. Also, Jake Rouse lost by that same score at the No. 3 position. In No. 1 doubles, Jake Newhouse and Andrew Tyree fell 6-0, 6-0. Excel forfeited at the No. 2 position.

In girls tennis, Abbey Hibbard lost at the No. 1 singles position 6-1, 6-1, Catherine Harris lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 while at the No. 3 position Caroline Moore lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. At the No. 1 doubles slot Taylor Vaughn and Nikki Burkhalter lost 6-0, 6-0, while at No. 2 doubles Halie Weismith and Betsy Lochridge lost 6-1, 6-1.

"Caroline Moore played real tough but without a solid put away shot, it makes it hard for her to just keep chasing down balls," Hibbard said. "This was our last season match but we hope to use the rest of this week to practice and clarify exactly what we need to do in both singles and doubles. It all comes down to the basics and getting a few breaks."

The losses dropped the Eagles record to 0-8, 0-2 in Region 6-A, and the Lady Eagles fell to 2-3 and 0-2.
