For the second time in nearly as many days, the Woodland High track and field team swept a meet, winning its own meet Saturday at the Army National Guard Invitational.

Woodland won 16 events during the 14th annual invitational, which was in its first year of sponsorship with the Army National Guard. The hosts pulled off sweeps in the shot put, discus throw, 100-meter dash, and 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Rounding out the team standings were Woodstock, Creekview, Sequoyah, East Paulding, North Paulding, Lambert, Cartersville and North Forsyth on the girls' side, and Woodstock, North Paulding, Creekview, North Forsyth, Lambert, Sequoyah and Hiram (tie), Cartersville and East Paulding.

Individual event winners for Woodland included Ricky Ranel (high jump), Ariana Lovins (long jump), Diana Wimpy (shot put, discus), Nathan Loe (shot put, discus), Deo Adams (triple jump, 400, 300 hurdles), Derrick Hardin (100), Idraiah Thompson (100, 200) and Cameron Leonard (3,200).

Adams was named the top male athlete at the meet, while Creekview's Anna Dunn won the award on the girls' side.

Olajuan Harris of Cartersville, the only other local team at the meet, also was among the Bartow County winners as he finished first in the boys 110 hurdles.

Two school records were set at the meet by Woodland's Leonard, who ran a 10-minute 3,200, and Ross Reeves, who cleared 13 feet in the pole vault.

"I think we did well," Woodland boys coach Adrian Steele said. "I'm extremely proud of Cameron Leonard for running a personal record and breaking a school record. I think the guys performed well.

"Ross Reeves set a new school record. That was a great jump. ... I'm excited because it was good to have some competition on campus. We had some 5-A schools -- we had Woodstock and North Forsyth."

Woodland girls coach David Holloway also showered his team with praise following its performance.

"The girls did a great job today," Holloway said. "Ariana Lovins stepped it up today; [she] had a PR. Idraiah Thompson did a good job today, winning the 100 and 200; [she also was] part of the 4x1 [and] 4x4 [relay teams]. Diana Wimpy, in the shot put and discus, just [did] what she does ... [in] being consistent. She and April Morgan kind of help us get off to a good start at every meet."

With rain postponing the meet by a week -- altering its typical time frame from the last weekend in March to the first weekend in April -- the Woodland Invitational saw a decline in numbers as some schools pulled out in anticipation of spring break.

"I wish more teams would have come. We actually had to reschedule it because of the rain [last Saturday]," Steele said. "We only ended up having 10 boys teams and [nine] girls teams."

Even teams that showed up may not have had all of their athletes.

"Most people weren't at their full strength because of spring break, but [there was] still pretty good competition," Holloway said.

Woodland, which won the Bartow County Championships Thursday, returns to action after spring break with a home meet against Hiram and Paulding County on Thursday, April 14. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
