The first tryout was held over the weekend at the JH Morgan Gym and drew 21 basketball players, according to Alex Ewalt, sports information assistant with the school.
The next tryout will be Saturday, May 14, also at the 129 Aubrey St. gym. The tryouts are from 1 until 3:30 p.m.
David Archer, head basketball coach for the Golden Eagles, said the weekend tryout brought to the attention of coaches "about four or five players."
He said coaches are keenly interested in Mays High star Devarick Houston, who he said also has drawn interest from other programs.
"We kind of have to wait and see what he decides, but he could fill a void pretty well for us," Archer said.
Houston is a swing man with long arms who gets around court and makes his presence felt.
Archer said the team made the playoffs in March, but he felt it needed some of the qualities a good athlete in that position brings to the court. "We felt something was missing that someone like Houston could provide."
The coach said the team now contains about "six or seven players" who participated in tryouts last year. He said some of the players had participated because of requests from his basketball contacts while others just learned of the tryouts and attended.
He said several key positions are open on the team and those trying out are getting serious looks.
"We're losing all our post players except one," he said. "The rest are moving on because they are sophomores."
The coaches also are looking to fill the combo guard and shooting guard positions.
Coaches are looking for ways to bring success to the school and the athletes.
"With these tryout sessions, you are trying to find the diamond in the rough," Archer said. "You try to find that kid that has gone underneath the radar."
Ewalt said the tryouts provide another opportunity for gifted athletes to take their skills to the next level. He noted a lot of scholarships have been handed out already and the window of opportunity is closing for this season.
He said the youths not only attend Chattahoochee, but they also have an opportunity to possibly attend a four-year school after playing for the Golden Eagles.
Participants in the tryouts are asked to bring their high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores, a copy of college transcripts and a reversible practice jersey. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
