Action will continue to heat up for a couple of local baseball teams this week as the Adairsville Tigers and Cartersville Purple Hurricanes welcome second-round playoff opponents to Tiger Valley and Richard Bell Field, respectively.
The Class AAA Canes host North Hall in a doubleheader Wednesday while the Class AA Tigers host Blessed Trinity the same day. A third game would be played Thursday, if necessary. Times for the games have yet to be determined.
In the first round, third-ranked Cartersville (23-4) got a stiff test from a better-than-expected Arabia Mountain team, which fell to the Canes 9-1, 6-2 (extra innings).
Fourth-ranked Adairsville (24-3) did not get much resistance from its first-round foe, shutting out Manchester in both of its game, 14-0, 15-0. The Tigers figure to get more of a fight from the first-ranked Titans.
Below are other sporting events for this week.
TRACK AND FIELD: Woodland's Diana Wimpy and Idraiah Thompson and Cartersville's Caroline Haupt compete in the Georgia High School Association Girls Track and Field State Championship Thursday through Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
Wimpy, a defending state champion in the discus throw, will look to make it back-to-back state titles Thursday when the field events are held. She also will compete in the shot put. Wimpy qualified for both events a year ago.
Thompson, the Lady Wildcats' sensational freshman, will compete in the 100- and 200-meter races. She also spearheads Woodland's state-qualifying 4x100 relay team, which includes Renee Arnold, Tiana Bush and Jasmin Askew. Bush was a part of last season's 4x100 team, which made it to state as well.
The Lady Canes' Haupt booked her first trip to state by winning both hurdle events -- 100 and 300 -- at region.
Preliminaries for running events are scheduled for Friday with finals in the events set for Saturday.
SPRING FOOTBALL: Local teams wrap up spring football practice this week, culminating with intra squad scrimmages at the end of the week.
Woodland scrimmages Friday, beginning with freshmen at 5 p.m.
Adairsville also holds their scrimmage Friday, with an expected 5:30 p.m. start.
Cartersville's scrimmage takes place Saturday with the Cartersville Middle School team taking the field at 11 a.m. followed by the high school's junior varsity team at noon. The Canes' varsity hits the field for its scrimmage at 1 p.m.
A start time for Cass's scrimmage has not been determined as of yet.
