The forecast for today calls for a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 96. The heat index values could reach as high as 103.
A heat advisory means levels of dangerous heat are expected. Residents should stay indoors and drink plenty of fluids. The elderly, very young and those with heart conditions are most at risk. Friends, relatives and neighbors should check on those who may be in danger during the extreme heat.
The National Weather Service advises that when possible strenuous activities should be rescheduled to early morning or after sunset. Also wear light and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
In addition to the heat advisory, the Environmental Protection Division issued an air quality alert for today. Under code orange conditions, the outdoor air is unhealthy for children, people who are sensitive to ozone, and people with heart or lung disease.
