Adairsville opened with a win in the Model Blue Devil Softball Tournament Saturday and lost three games by a single run as it opened a new season in which it hopes to ramp up its competitive play.

Just how competitive the Lady Tigers will be remains to be seen, but they showed promise for new head coach Jacob Travis while hampered by some tentative fielding and, at times, low run production.

Coach Travis said the Lady Tigers are a young team but they did some good things in the two-day tournament.

“We went 1-5,” he said, “but we thought we played three games that were winnable for us and could have been 4-2. We showed a lot of heart against Sonoraville (on Saturday). We were down 3-0 and came back. We gave up two runs in the extra inning and scored one run and had a runner in scoring position.”

He said the team needs to improve but they are working with that goal in mind. “We’ll probably get better next week.”



Adairsville 7, Armuchee 0

Taylor Weeks pitched a one-hitter against the Lady Indians and coupled it with eight strikeouts as the Lady Tigers won, 7-0.

Adairsville scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second and two in the fourth.

Offensively Adairsville was powered by Hannah Kirkpatrick, who was credited with four RBIs as she went 2-of-2 and coaxed a base on balls; Cassidy Howren, 2-of-3 with two runs scored; Weeks, three runs, going 0-of-1 with two walks and reaching on an error; and Mallorie Collum, 2-of-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Weeks gave up two walks in her complete-game pitching effort.

Trion 2, Adairsville 1

Trion scored two unearned runs and slipped by Adairsville in the Lady Tigers’ second tournament game Friday.

Weeks worked four innings and allowed two hits while striking out one and walking one.

Trion scored in the first and third while Adairsville scored its run in the third frame.

Weeks led the team offensively as she went 2-of-3 and scored the Lady Tigers’ run. Collum, Erika Cannon and Morgan Creel were 1-of-2 at the plate.

Calhoun 14, Adairsville 0

Calhoun took an easy win over Adairsville on Friday, scoring three runs in the first, five in the second and six in the third.

Weeks took the loss on the mound, surrendering six runs on six hits in one inning of work.

Haley Lancaster pitched two innings, giving up eight hits, two walks and eight runs.

Weeks, Collum and Hannah Kirkpatrick were 1-of-2 at the plate.

Gordon Central 3, Adairsville 2

The Lady Tigers lost a heartbreaker to Gordon Central, 3-2, Saturday despite allowing just one earned run.

Adairsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Warriors answered in the second, to notch the game at 1-all.

The Lady Tigers retook the lead in the third inning, going up 2-1, but the Lady Warriors tied the contest at 2-all in the bottom of the frame and scrapped their way to a 3-2 lead in the fifth frame.

Adairsville tried to answer in the top of the sixth as Collum worked her way to a full count and drew a ball outside the strike zone to collect a base on balls.

She then stole second and third but advanced no further.

Weeks pitched five innings and took the loss. She allowed one hit and struck out five while walking five and giving up one earned run.

Collum went 1-of-2 with two RBIs, off a single and a sacrifice, while scoring a run. Weeks was 1-of-2 and scored a run.

Cedartown 9, Adairsville 0

The Lady Bulldogs had a easy time against Adairsville, whipping the Lady Tigers, 9-0.

Lancaster pitched five innings, allowing nine hits, striking out six and walking three.

Offensively, Creel was 1-of-2 and Baylee Edwards went 2-of-2 for Adairsville.

Sonoraville 5, Adairsville 4

Adairsville saved its most competitive game for last, losing to Sonoraville, 5-4, in extra innings in their final game of the invitational tournament Saturday.

Sonoraville had jumped on the Lady Tigers early, forging a 3-0 lead through four innings.

Adairsville came back in the fifth with three runs to tie the game.

In extra innings, Sonoraville tallied two runs and the Lady Tigers scored one run and had the tying run on base but couldn’t get it across the plate.

Weeks took the loss, giving up 10 hits and two walks while striking out three.

She was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring a run and recording an RBI. Kirkpatrick went 2-for-4; Howren was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; McKenna Gulledge scored two runs.

The Lady Tigers scored two runs off wild pitches and passed balls.
