Returning to action with a trimmed-down roster, the Cartersville Fury, a travel girls basketball team, captured the Back to School Blues tournament trophy last weekend at Fair Oaks Recreation Center in Marietta.

The Fury — playing with eight players, down from 15 — overcame a slow start to the tournament following a nearly two-month layoff to win the championship game, 35-25, against the Georgia Blaze — which beat Cartersville at the start of the tournament.

Jana Morning scored a team-high 12 points to lead the Fury while Chyna Johnson contributed with 6 points in the title-clinching victory.

The Canton-based Blaze held on for a one-point win over Cartersville, 24-23, in Game 1, despite Kimora McClinic’s 7 points and eight rebounds.

The Fury rebounded by finally getting the monkey of its back with a 39-30 win over the Marietta Stars, whom it had lost to three previous times. Lexy Wallraven notched 12 points and Kalisha Printup scored 6 for Cartersville.

Finding its groove in Game 3, the Fury routed the North Georgia Heat, a team out of Cummings. Cartersville’s 39-9 win was spurred by Crystal Martinez, McClinic and Printup, who each scored 8 points.
