"We're going to be doing some sketches from, shall we say, classical British comedians over the years. ... It's going to be fun," said Kip Henderson, who is directing, producing and acting in the show.
To be held at The Legion Theatre, "A Bit of British Comedy" will consist of 16 to 18 skits, with each one lasting about five minutes in length. While Henderson did not want to reveal too many details about the show, the sketches will be in the vein of Benny Hill, Mr. Bean and Monty Python.
Along with Henderson, the other cast members will include Pat Mrizek, Erin Brown, Dan Rich, Shane Phebus, Joel Coady, Stacy Vaccaro and Barry King.
"The reason for [this type of] fundraiser is that it's getting tougher to have a consistent audience with classic community theater plays," said Mike Harris, vice president and marketing director for The Pumphouse Players. "We're having to branch out into areas that The Pumphouse Players haven't done before, such as improv nights, talent nights and one-night comedy shows and that type of thing.
"The community in Bartow County is much more diverse than, say, 36 years ago when The Pumphouse Players started. We're just trying to offer something for everybody, [for] all different tastes. Of course, baby boomers, which are a large part of our community, grew up with these British comedy shows from the '60s and '70s and '80s. We're just hoping that this type of comedy might appeal to a lot of folks in and around Cartersville."
The show's proceeds will assist in The Pumphouse Players' efforts in maintaining its presence at The Legion Theatre, 114 W. Main St. in Cartersville.
"With public funding being reduced drastically and ticket sales are more difficult to depend on ... we're just trying to offer multiple types of entertainment and this is one of them," Harris said, adding state and local grants have decreased. "So it's a combination of public funding being hard to come by and ticket sales for traditional three-act shows are harder to come by as well. So we're just diversifying."
Tickets to "A Bit of British Comedy" are $12 for general admission and $10 for Pumphouse Players members and groups of 10 or more. For more information, visit www.pumphouseplayers.com or call 770-387-2610.
