Cartersville Middle School started its football season on a high note by scoring offensively or defensively in every quarter on its way to defeating Adairsville Middle, 42-0.

Offensively, the Canes made three touchdowns from long distance, on runs of 61, 63 and 70 yards, while defensively they lit up the scoreboard with an 80-yard interception run, a 27-yard fumble return and a 38-yard return of a blocked punt.

Kobe Whitfield started the scoring for the Canes with a 61-yard run deep in the first quarter of Thursday's contest.

Tiamon Pennymon added a second long touchdown run -- a 63-yarder -- with just six seconds remaining in the same frame.

The Canes scored on a standout defensive play well into the second quarter when Pennymon returned an interception 80 yards.

With about two minutes remaining until halftime, Whitfield scored his second touchdown by taking a fumble to the house from 27 yards out.

Xaiver Coaxum returned a punt -- blocked by Max McGinnis -- some 38 yards for the Canes' fifth touchdown in the third frame.

James Darns put the Canes' final touchdown in the end zone on a 70-yard run midway through the final quarter.
