The Cartersville junior varsity football team earned its first victory of the season last Thursday night against Northwest Whitfield. The Purple Hurricanes won 26-12 behind an offense led by quarterback Brooks Barden, TL Ford and Kalin Heath. The defense was carried by Blake Davis, Deandre Cochran, Mark Quattlebaum and Malik Wilkins.

Cartersville does not have a freshmen team for the 2011 season. Therefore, its JV team has combined freshmen and sophomores.

Jeff Cave, Canes JV coach, has other plans for a team that plays a much more abridged schedule than that of its varsity counterpart.

“Because of the shorter season, we are looking at them possibly contributing to the varsity season this year,” Cave said. “We have great talent in our offense and hope for that to be the offense in the future. Our offense is capable of making a play anywhere on the field and our defense was on top of the ball.”
