Unable to corral Sequoyah or offer much in the name of its own offense, Cass found itself staring at an insurmountable lead halfway through its football game at Doug Cochran Stadium on Friday.

The visiting Chiefs, as desperate for a win as the Colonels, did not give their hosts even a sliver of a hope for a comeback as they won going away, 44-10.

Sequoyah’s recipe for success featured a heavy dose of smashmouth football. Of its nearly 40 plays from scrimmage, just three were passes.

When a running game gets to ripping and rolling like the Chiefs were, it is hard to justify putting the ball in the air much, and quarterback Lex Lauletta had no qualms with handing off to Sequoyah’s bevy of runners.

Obie Myers led the charge first by scoring on an 18-yard run in the first quarter. Blake Ingleton tacked on a 22-yard run to put the Chiefs ahead 14-0 a few minutes into the game.

In the second quarter, James Harris drilled a 24-yard field goal to increase his team’s lead before Sequoyah closed out its first-half scoring with two nearly 50-yard runs.

Ingleton scored his touchdown from 48 yards out, and Stuart Glassic ran 46 yards to the house for his score.

Down 30-0, Cass managed to get on the board before heading to the locker room as Guadalupe Rangel made a field goal from 39 yards.

The Chiefs continued to pile on the points in the second half, scoring twice in third quarter on Myers’ 4-yard run and Ingleton’s 3-yard run.

The Colonels needed all four quarters to find the end zone with Kelin Well’s 3-yard run providing the final margin.

Ingleton and Glassic each topped the 100-yard mark for Sequoyah, while Wells was limited to 29 yards on the ground for Cass. Colonels wide receiver Loren Drayton had three catches for 41 yards.

Cass (0-4, 0-4 Region 7-AAAA) hosts South Forsyth (1-2, 1-2) Friday while Sequoyah (1-3, 1-3) welcomes Rome (2-2, 2-2).
