The election for Bartow County Commissioner might be more than a year away, but the race gained its first entrant Thursday when Bartow County Chief Building Inspector Tony Tidwell officially announced his candidacy.

Sole Commissioner Clarence Brown has held the office for 20 years and has made clear his plans to retire after his current term. The November 2012 election will decide his successor.

“I want to let the people of Bartow County know that I will be running for county commissioner next year,” Tidwell said. “We have a good foundation the previous commissioners have left for us and I would like to build on that to make Bartow County a better place to live.”

Tidwell, a Bartow County native, has served the county for 28 years working in building inspection.

“I’m familiar with how county departments interact with each other and I’m ready to take the next step,” he said.

Tidwell admits the announcement is early, but wants to put his hat in the arena so that voters could know his intent to run before putting their support behind another candidate.
