Georgia State Patrol Post 3 confirmed about 5:15 p.m. that shots had been fired at troopers after a be-on-the-lookout was issued for a vehicle firing at motorists on Interstate 75. It is unclear which direction the shooters were traveling.
According to reports, the three Hispanic male suspects exited at Highway 20 where they shot at a GSP trooper. Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputies joined the pursuit, which reportedly followed Highway 20 into Cherokee County.
BCSO Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said the BCSO, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, GSP, Department of Natural Resources and Acworth police were involved in the search. Air support was called in during the search, and the DNR deployed watercraft on Lake Allatoona to assist in the manhunt.
Rogers said K9 units and DNR canines also were being used but not those from Bartow County.
Residents in the area of Sweetwater Trail and Woodall Road, and residents in Cherokee County, reported roads were blocked and heavily armed law enforcement were patrolling the area.
GSP said just before 9 p.m. Sunday the three suspects had not been captured, adding that no information was expected to be released until today.
