After nearly two months from the day Michael Morris Jr. was found guilty of felony murder by a local jury in August, a sentence was handed down Tuesday in Bartow Superior Court using a 2009 law.

Morris was convicted for the Aug. 22, 2009, murder of Joshua Moore and "the armed and almost fatal assault" on Dwayne Westbrooks following an armed domestic violence assault on his former girlfriend, Cheryl Newborn, according to a press release.

Judge David K. Smith used the law -- for the first time in Bartow County -- providing that a judge has the authority to enter a sentence of life without parole without prosecutors first having to seek the death penalty.

Judge Smith also sentenced Morris to 20 years each on the two armed assault convictions and five years on each of the four firearm violations where Morris was found guilty.

Total, Morris's sentence was life without parole plus 60 years.
