Goodwill Career Center lines up job fair Thursday

Cartersville's Goodwill Career Center will do its part to combat stubbornly high unemployment rates with a job fair Thursday looking to match employers with qualified job seekers.

Representatives from 10 employers will be on hand at the Goodwill Career Center located at 929 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, across from Cartersville Medical Center. Immediate openings in a variety of industries will be filled from applicants attending Thursday's job fair lasting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"We're going to have approximately 10 vendors participating and they're going to be ranging from hiring for administrative and clerical, customer service, warehouse, light industrial and assembly," said Career Center Director Phyllis Bunch. "We have one company that will be creating a second shift, so they will be on-site doing the applications and they will be hiring anywhere from 20 to 25 people direct and they just need to have small hand tool [experience.] ... We have another company hiring customer service with some phone skills and basic computer skills."

Some companies will have representatives on-site prepared to conduct interviews at the fair in one of the career center's private interview rooms.

Military recruiters will also be on hand to provide information and answer questions as will multiple staffing agencies with an operational relationship with the Cartersville career center.

Applicants are asked to dress professionally and bring with them copies of their resume, a pen and two forms of identification.

Opened in August, the career center is located inside the Goodwill retail store providing resources for local job seekers, including computers, Internet access, copiers, telephones, job listings and job counseling services. Since opening, excluding October, the Cartersville career center has registered nearly 1,000 job seekers.

"Those are 1,000 people in the community that have come in and used the resource -- and that just includes the first time they register so they might have been coming back," said Elaine Armstrong, public relations director for Goodwill of North Georgia. "We have already placed about 140 people that are working out of the nearly 1,000 that have come through. That number may seem small in comparison to the number that have come through, but at the same time, these are people that were not working, they were unemployed.

"It just speaks to the need of the community. They're a resource and people are finding out about it and it's good that Phyllis and the employers locally can get together and hold these resource fairs because people are definitely looking for those jobs."

Additional resources available from the career center include regular seminars and workshops to help job seekers find employment. Calendars featuring upcoming events are published every Monday.

"Just yesterday, our lobby was filled with people coming in doing our resume class. ... Usually we do it just from 12 to 1 [p.m.], but yesterday we hosted several resume classes so people would have their resume redone and ready for the job fair on Thursday," Bunch said. "Everything we do is complimentary, there's no charge and we're doing Microsoft Word, Excel, basic computer, how to interview for success, dress for success. These are classes that are listed on our calendar."
