In its eight-point semifinal win against the host Tigers, Simpson and Lane combined for 101 rushing yards and 138 passing yards. The pair hooked up for Cass’ first score in the second quarter on a 36-yard pass from Simpson to Lane, which put the Colonels up 7-0 following Anthony Navarro’s extra point.
That connection stood as the lone points for either team going into halftime.
Cass, however, added another touchdown in the third as Lane hit paydirt again on a 30-yard run with 4:33 to go in the quarter. Navarro’s extra point split the uprights to give the Colonels a 14-0 lead.
Adairsville picked up its only score of the game in the fourth quarter with Torrey Hale finding Patrick Johnson on a 22-yard TD pass. The extra point failed.
Offensive leaders for the Colonels were Boo Reed (102 receiving yards), Lane (92 rushing yards) and Simpson (138 passing yards).
Sidney Johnson set the tone for the Tigers’ rushing attack as he finished with 128 yards on the ground.
On defense, Cass got contributions from Elliot Anderson, Noah Foley, and Joseph Kennemore (five tackles each) as well as from Marcus Robinson (four tackles), Reed and Brandon Green (three tackles each), Austin Akins (two tackles) and Diuntae Ware (one tackle).
Daelen Harris’ five tackles paced Adairsville’s defensive efforts as did Johnson’s four tackles and Tyler Sutton’s two tackles and interception. Also contributing for the Tigers were Ryan Arial, Dallas Cannon and Israel Dover, two tackles apiece, and Orry Carter, who had one tackle.
Adairsville closed its season with a 6-2 record while the Colonels prepare to face the Calhoun Yellow Jackets. Both championship contenders are 6-2. The game will be played Thursday at Calhoun High with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. The game also will be live via webcast at www.cartersvilleyouthsports.com.
