Woodland feasted early offensively and overcame a bit of famine late to defeat North Paulding 75-42.

Greg Murphy led the Wildcats with a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 13 rebounds in the Tuesday night win.

Woodland jumped on the Wolfpack in the first quarter, mixing it with opportunistic defensive play on the way to a 29-9 lead. Woodland let just six points slip through the netting in the second quarter while scoring 23 and taking control at the break with a 52-15 margin.

The Wolfpack responded in the third quarter with an 18-13 run, closing to 65-33, but was outscored 10-9 in the final period by the Wildcats.

"It was the best first half we've played in a long, long time," head coach Mike Tobin said. "We didn't play as well in the second half, though, and they outscored us in the third quarter. We weren't closing them out as well and they had four 3s in that quarter. The same effort just wasn't there in the second half. We will need that same effort for 32 minutes."

Woodland opened the scoring with a vengeance, running up a 12-0 lead before North Paulding could get its offense untracked as Corey Tobin buried two 3s, Brandon Thompson scored two layups and Murphy chipped in another and the road warriors took a 12-0 lead.

Coach Tobin said the Wildcats were fired up for the game, noting the teams had an early season common foe in Walker. North Paulding had claimed a comfortable 20-point margin of victory against that foe. While Woodland also won handily, the Wildcats were tied at half time with it.

For Woodland on Tuesday night, Thompson came up big, hitting 4-of-5 field goals and sinking 6-of-6 free throws.

The victory improved Woodland's record to 3-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 7-AAAA. North Paulding's overall record dropped to 1-1. It is 0-0 in Region 5-AAAA.

Other leading scorers for Woodland were Chandler Royal, 10 points; Corey Tobin, 14; Thompson, 14. Royal was credited with four steals while Tobin and Thompson grabbed three steals each.

Woodland next plays against Gordon Central, who it hosts Saturday. Tipoff is at 4:30 p.m.

Woodland will be giving out free megaphones to the first 100 fans at the game.
