"Going green" is the term coined for environmentally minded efforts, but city-wide recycling also saves some green for public works by reducing the amount of trash taken to the landfill.
More participants are signing up each day with the total nearing 1,000. Recycling will be picked up on a 5-day-a-week, alternating schedule with each residence being collected every two weeks.
"We're excited, by the end of today we'll probably have about 975 signed up. Today was the first day and it went off without a hitch so far," said Public Works Director Bobby Elliott. "We had 138 on today's list -- there were 22 folks that either didn't have it out or didn't have enough to put out."
A $2 fee will be charged to all solid-waste customers to cover the program implementation costs, including a new truck and an additional employee. Recycling bins, or "curbies," are, however, being provided for free. Customers receive two curbies for recycling use -- dark blue for metal, plastic and glass, and gray for paper.
Once the city reaches 1,000 participants, the current supply of recycling bins will be depleted but an order for 1,000 more units was approved by the city council Thursday. Depending on demand, there may be a short waiting list before the shipment arrives. This final order will provide containers for the projected amount of participants based on a national average.
"The original plan was to buy containers for 1,500 participants. Without knowing how many will sign up, you use a national average of available customers -- 25 to 30 percent is the participation rate for recycling nation wide," Elliott said.
The program is one Elliott calls "past due" and is excited to get started.
Residents interested in participating can be added to the list by calling the public works office at 770-387-5602 or by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with their name, address and phone number. More information on the program is available on the city's website, www.cityofcartersville.org; the recycling link can be found on the left side of the page.
