Tax Commissioner VaLenda Bailey is encouraging all new homeowners and anyone who has moved or had a name change regarding home ownership to apply for homestead exemption before the April 1 deadline.

"It is a savings to [taxpayers], and they only have to file one time as long as they live in the same home and don't change the name on it or anything like that," Bailey said, adding "it only takes a few minutes of your time."

Anyone owning and residing in their home on Jan. 1 can qualify.

According to Bailey, "Homestead exemption will reduce the amount of property tax you must pay on your residence. Rental property does not qualify for any exemption.

"Several types of homestead exemptions have been enacted. Once granted, the homestead exemption is automatically renewed each year."
