Even with the host school participating in just its fourth meet of the season, the results favored the home side as Woodland’s boys and girls finished 1-2, respectively, amongst the field.
The Wildcats scored 86 points, placing ahead of Etowah, 56; Johns Creek, 49; Villa Rica, 45; Kennesaw Mountain, 44; Douglas County, 42; Sequoyah, 31; South Paulding, 30; Cass, 25; East Paulding, 24; Lithia Springs, 23; North Paulding, 22; Chattahoochee, 22; Gordon Central, 21; Lambert, 20; South Forsyth, 19; Paulding County, 19; Northwest Whitfield, 16; Creekview, 12; River Ridge, 11; Hiram, 5; and Rome, 2.
Earning points for the Woodland boys were Dameek Lewis (discus throw); Deo Adams (triple jump, 400 meter dash, 300 meter hurdles); Trey Thompson (triple jump, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash); the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams; Bryce Marratta (pole vault); Qua Stocks (high jump); Brandon Thompson (high jump); and CJ Woods (100 meter dash, 200 meter dash).
Justin Reed (discus throw), Kadeem Buford (long jump), Greg Edwards (long jump), Aramis Ellis (shot put) and Michael Phillips (110 meter hurdles) scored points for the Cass boys.
The overall top male performer at the meet was Derrick White from Lithia Springs.
The Lady Wildcats tallied 59 points, narrowly missing out on overtaking Etowah, the girls champion with 61 points. Rounding out the standings for the rest of the girls teams — not all teams scored — were Johns Creek, 55; Lambert, 51; Etowah, 46; Northwest Whitfield, 43; Rome, 41; Creekview, 37; Chattahoochee, 32; Lithia Springs, 28; South Forsyth, 25; South Paulding, 24; Villa Rica, 22; Gordon Central, 22; River Ridge, 16; North Paulding, 16; Sequoyah, 16; Cass, 15; East Paulding, 8; Douglas County, 5; and Rockmart, 1.
Point scorers for the Woodland girls were Samantha Patterson (pole vault); Ashley Barrera (3200 meter run); Ariana Lovins (triple jump); Aubrey Branch (triple jump); the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams; Brianna Brown (high jump); Lacey Fritz (discus throw); Katie Harris (400 meter dash); Idraiah Thompson (100 meter dash, 200 meter dash); and Jasmin Askew (100 meter dash).
Point scorers for the Cass girls were Janee Callahan (shot put); Octavia Pendleton (shot put); the 4x100 meter relay team; and Amber Bowen (100 meter hurdles).
The overall top female performer at the meet was Simmie Bray from Etowah.
Woodland girls coach David Holloway felt good about the performance from his young team.
“I thought they did pretty well. Most of my girls are pretty young. It’s primarily freshmen and sophomores. … We only got a couple of seniors. The youngsters did pretty well,” Holloway said. “They’re looking good for the future. They gotta keep working.”
Adrian Steele, Woodland boys coach, thought the host school could’ve come away with a sweep but noted that this will be added incentive for the girls to work even harder.
“I was actually shocked the girls didn’t win,” Steele said. “Even though they’re young, they’re talented and they have a great work ethic.”
In regard to his team, Steele had to take a wait-and-see approach with the Wildcats missing one of their top athletes.
“I was so nervous going into the meet, especially with so many teams and the level of competition — and then not having Xavier Hendricks who had one of the top [seed] times in the 300 [hurdles] and the top time in the 110 hurdles,” he said. “I was definitely excited for the boys, especially for them to come together [and pull it out]. … I think it was an overall team effort. Everybody played their part and did well.”
Nearly 10 schools at the meet were from Region 7-AAAA, giving Woodland a preview of its competition next month at the region meet.
“We had about nine of the teams in our region, so it was nice to see some of the teams in our region. We had a lot of teams that will be in our region next year, so that was nice, too,” Holloway said.
“I was excited to see Johns Creek,” Steele added. “When it comes down to it, I think they’re gonna be the ones in the region that test us the most. … They’re the ones that give me a little bit of concern because they are a team that’s put together well as far as field [and track] events.”
Below are the results of all point earners from the meet. The only event not included is the last event of the day — the 4x400 relays — which was won by Woodland’s boys and girls in times of 3 minutes, 30 seconds and 4:15, respectively.
