The Woodland track and field teams rounded out the month of March the same way they came in Thursday at the Bartow County Championships at Cass High, where the boys and girls ran away with the titles to go into spring break with some momentum.

It was the fourth time this season both teams have been victorious at the same multi-team meet, and at the county meet, the two teams won by a combined 109 points.

The Lady Wildcats (136.5 points) placed ahead of second-place Cartersville (71.5) as well as Cass (36.5) and Adairsville (16).

The Wildcats (110) outpaced runner-up Cartersville (66), Cass (52) and Adairsville (22).

David Holloway, Woodland girls coach, liked what he saw out of his young team, which had the meet's most valuable girl performer in Ariana Lovins, who won the long jump and triple jump while placing fourth in the 400 meter dash.

"I thought they did a great job. We're a young team for the most part. It's always good to get a good win and get experience," Holloway said of the Lady Wildcats. "[We're] just always trying to get better. We had a lot of people get personal bests tonight, so that would be good. It's just always good to come out here and try to continue doing the best, so when it comes time for region and things like that you can just continue going. And again, like we try and tell 'em, winning is something you work at all the time. No matter what, you have to go out there and put your best foot forward and always perform your best, and our girls were doing that tonight. We're very proud of the performances they gave tonight."

The Wildcats were without 110 meter hurdler Xavier Hendricks, who was nursing a hamstrung injury, but they still had plenty in the lineup to run away with the meet, especially with Deo Adams and C.J. Woods who claimed two events -- the triple jump and 300 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, respectively. Adams edged out his teammate for best overall male performance with his third-place showing in the long jump. Woods finished a couple of spots behind in the same event.

"We were excited today, I'm not gonna lie," said Woodland boys coach Adrian Steele. "[I] would've liked to have seen some better times as far as the 4x4 [relay]. I thought the 4x1 did well. From what they said, if I'm not mistaken, it might have tied the school record. I didn't think it did. I thought it looked a little slow, but it ended up tying the school record. I thought we did pretty well. It's always good to come out with a win, but like I always say, we still need some work and I want to continue to work, to keep peaking at the right time, to get our best times. We had a lot of kids get [personal records]; [we] had Logan [Rempe] get a PR in some of his races, and then the 4x4 and the 4x1. [We] just want to continue to keep working hard ... and [we're] just trying to get better so we'll be right for region."

The Lady Purple Hurricanes sported a second-place finish for the second straight year and the Canes improved one spot with their showing Thursday, performances that had coach Rusty Grimmett complimenting the Cass High track.

"This must be a fast track because we ran some fast times. About all the way down the line, we ran our best times of the year at this meet, so I can't complain about that at all. The kids did a great job, they competed hard, and that's all you can ask for. My hat's off to them," Grimmett said of his athletes.

Cartersville's performance comes on the heels of another great outing last Saturday at Ronnie McClurg Rotary Invitational at Dalton where the boys took seventh and the girls fourth. Both of the school's teams are performing well, and even with spring break coming up, there will be work to be done.

"You're just gonna have to work during spring break. It's a good time to rest ... but too much rest is bad. We're gonna give 'em off during spring break, give 'em workouts to do and hopefully they'll do those workouts. When we come back, we're gonna have 'bout a week and a half before region," Grimmett said. "It's critical at this time to be running well, and I think we are."

Host Cass earned third in both the boys and girls meets, which drew praise from girls coach D.L. Koontz.

"Overall, I'd say both boys and girls competed well. You get a lot of [situations] in track where kids pull themselves out of events randomly [and] you don't know where they're at. Obviously that didn't happen tonight with us. Everybody ran as hard as they could, pushed themselves to the limits. When you have a small team like we do, it's tough. But what we lack in numbers, we make up [for] in heart," Koontz said.

The teams, he said, could use the performance as a building block after giving an all-out effort.

"They [get to] experience some success here. It's a chance to run against all their friends, some of 'em are family members and everything. You just hope it gives 'em that little extra kick to say, 'OK, the season is winding down. Now we've gotta really make sure we push ourselves to the limits in practice and every chance we get to compete in our region,'" Koontz added. "Let's face it, we're gonna go against some very talented schools. Obviously we're gonna see Woodland again, both boys and girls, and their performance can only be described as 'wow.'"

As for Adairsville, boys coach Doug Byerts also likes where both of the school's teams are headed, even if he didn't think Thursday was either team's best performance. The Tigers and Lady Tigers both came in fourth but scored higher than they did last year.

"We did well. It's been a long week, I guess, so far and kind of a long season for us just because we've been going Tuesdays and Thursdays. I felt like our legs were pretty heavy across the board," Byerts said. "I thought our girls competed real well; some of our guys did as well. [Zach] Coker did well in the shot and we did well in some field events, but it wasn't our best performance overall. But, I'm pleased with where we're at right now and where we're going. [We] get a long break right here, a week off to get our legs back and hopefully finish the season up strong going into regions."
