The system uses the state textbook adoption cycle which is a seven-year cycle thereby adopting new texts for each content area every seven years.
“Textbooks are still an integral part of the instructional program, but they are no longer the sole source of information for teachers or students,” Assistant Superintendent Ken Clouse said. “There is so much more available through the Internet and multiple venues for today’s classroom.
“Textbooks are just one resource and should not be looked upon as the ultimate guide or dictator to any classroom instruction. Eventually, textbooks themselves will become obsolete as more Internet and virtual options become available to students on a continual basis.”
The board approved Vice President Kelley Dial to represent the board at the 2012 Georgia School Boards Association Delegate Assembly, June 15 to 16 in Savannah.
The slate of personnel recommendations was approved as presented. In those personnel actions, Susan Tolbert was appointed as the Director of Special Programs effective July 1. Tolbert has been serving as the interim in the position since January after the retirement of Kathy Anderson. Tolbert previously had served as an intervention specialist for the school system.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the school board is scheduled for Monday, May 14, at 6 p.m. The board’s work session will be held Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m.
