It may have taken the entire regular season, but Diana Wimpy eventually collected her first significant award or honor of her freshman season.

The former Woodland High catcher, who is now a member of the Walters State softball team, received Division I Player of the Week honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association on Wednesday.

Wimpy had the kind of stretch last weekend that would have been hard for her to even rival during her record-setting high school career. She hit six home runs in four games last Friday and Saturday en route to becoming the Morristown, Tenn., school's all-time leader in home runs for a season.

Overall, Wimpy went 13 for 19 (.684 batting average) with 13 RBIs and 11 runs.

In the last month, Wimpy's candidacy for player of the week has been building. She has been among the nation's best in hitting (.630), on-base percentage (.671) and home runs (26) for more than a month.

Wimpy and Walters State host Volunteer State Community College today and could earn the 2-seed for the Tennessee Community College/NJCAA Region VII tournament, which begins May 6 in Chattanooga.
