The Lady Purple Hurricanes will play next week against St. Pius X with the winner advancing to the Elite 8 round. Times and location were not immediately available.
"The girls are excited," an equally excited Melissa Moore, head coach, said after Thursday's victory. "It's such a young team and it's nice for them to go so far. It's also great for Adrienne [Green], being a senior, to advance in her last year, too."
Cartersville defeated Lanier 4-0 with one match suspended when the contest's outcome was no longer in doubt.
In line 1 singles play, Green overcame her opponent, 6-2, 6-4, while in singles line 2 play, freshman Darien DeFrench took a pair of 6-1 victories. At singles line 3, Maddy McGinnis earned two 6-2 wins.
In doubles line 1 play, Mallory Walker and Ali Norwood were victors by 6-1, 6-3.
At line 2 doubles, which was called early, sisters Annabeth Fox and Charleston Fox lost the first match 4-6 but had come roaring back to tie their contest with a 6-1 win in match two.
Green, a three-year starter, said she was glad to get a win her final year and is hopeful more will follow.
"I'd like to finish my high school career on a good note," she said, mindful of the long history of success the Lady Canes are continuing this season.
Green said she's been impressed by the play of her teammates as a whole.
"I think the girls team this year is really good," she said. "I think we have a real good chance."
The Cartersville player said she felt like she was able to lift her game for the state playoffs and that helped her Thursday.
"I played better in our match than I have been playing because we're in the state tournament," she said. "I was able to play with some confidence."
DeFrench also felt she elevated her game because of the challenge.
"I moved around and did what I've been practicing to do," she said.
She said playing for state made her "a little bit nervous, but when I get on a court I have confidence."
The Cartersville freshman said the team is trying to accomplish as much as it can this year.
"[This win] means we have a good, hard-working team and that we can make it," DeFrench said. "We're excited. We are excited to be in state and to have this opportunity."
Coach Moore said the team realized one of its goals with the win and now much continue to step up its play.
She said she and assistant coach Stephanie Earwick are proud of what the team has accomplished so far. "We could not ask for better players. They are so dedicated, so enthusiastic, and they are so supportive of one another. They have that spark we needed and that fire, and they were able to pull it through."
Cartersville, the No. 2 seed in Region 7-AAA, raised its overall record to 11-3 on the season. Lanier, the No. 3 seed in Region 8-AAA, dropped to 11-6.
The Lady Canes now play St. Pius X, the No. 1 seed in Region 5-AAA, which defeated Central Carrollton 3-0.
