Tipsters seeking rewards for information through the nonprofit organization CrimeStoppers will no longer be able to call the anonymous line as the group voted Thursday to disband.

According to board member Lynn Quick, the group is "talking about" shutting down the organization "basically because of the lack of funds and the way the economy is."

Tips have continued to be called into the line, but funding has dwindled since the crime prevention efforts began in 2006.

"We've been getting tips but the program runs on sponsorships and any contributions," Quick said. "That's where we get our money. We're not funded by anyone. So, with the economy the way it is, our funds have been down dramatically."

While CrimeStoppers is reportedly set to shut down their operations by June 14, the Bartow County Sheriff's Office is working with the group to take on the role and establish a new line that could go to a voicemail system. A different line, ideally, would be established for drug tips and an email system for tips also is being discussed. The BCSO hopes to be able to keep the current tip line phone number, 770-606-TIPS.
