Walters State catcher Diana Wimpy heads up a Bartow County contingent of softball players who racked up honors earlier this week at the Region VII tournament being held in Chattanooga.

Wimpy, a Woodland High alum, was chosen as the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association’s player of the year and MVP, along with being named to the first team.

Other Cartersville natives also earned selection to the all-conference team as second-team picks, including Chattanooga State pitcher Janna Scheff (Excel Christian Academy), Walters State third baseman Samaria Curtis (Cass High) and Cleveland State outfielder Sydney Howell (Excel Christian Academy).

After ruling the roost as all-county players during their senior seasons, the quartet of Bartow softball players have held down the fort in Tennessee as college freshmen as well.

It has been a spectacular season for Wimpy, The Daily Tribune News’ former player of the year. In 154 at-bats, she has produced 98 hits, a .636 batting average, and leads the rest of the country in individual hitting, according to the National Junior College Athletic Association website.

A .674 on-base percentage also has Wimpy at the top in another category, and her 26 home runs and 78 RBIs are second and seventh in the nation, respectively.

Additionally, Wimpy won her conference’s triple crown, leading in batting average, homers and RBIs.

Scheff has seen her name near the top of the leaderboard, too, coming in at No. 9 in the nation in individual pitching. The former Bartow co-pitcher of the year has appeared in 28 games, pitching 123 innings and allowing 14 earned runs on 87 hits and 27 walks, while striking out 117 batters.

Scheff has combined with the all-conference pitcher of the year, Ashley Czechner, to give Chatt State a formidable 1-2 pitching combination. The team is currently the top-seeded team in Tennessee and the No. 2 ballclub in the nation.

In terms of conference seeding, Walters State is just two spots behind Chatt State, and players like Curtis are part of the reason for that. Cass’ all-time stolen bases leader is batting .400 with 34 runs, 31 RBIs and 54 hits — including 10 doubles and a triple.

Rounding out the all-conference selections for Bartow is Howell, who has hit .343 with four home runs and 22 RBIs, while starting every game for Cleveland State. The ex-Excel player totals 23 hits on the season, with five of those being doubles and one a triple.
