Having spent some years in Ohio, Benham has campaigned for local political office and helped others attain a successful political stature as a social justice advocate and political activist.

"Lelia Benham sees this challenge as a very interesting time in her life as well as an interesting transitional period for the 15th district, which she believes now represents a constituency which would be better represented by a Democratic state representative," stated Benham's candidacy announcement.
Benham has a career working in small business, holding an MBE degree. She is now retired. Lelia is a mother of three and grandmother of six. She enjoys traveling to see them in Ohio where they reside.
