In his return to Bartow County, Joshua Tiggs hardly recognized the area’s track and field landscape, one that differs from the recollection he has of his days as a Cartersville High athlete.

“When we were running, there was a lot of publicity around the sport and I’ve noticed since I’ve relocated back to Cartersville that the love of the sport has kind of dwindled away a little bit,” said Tiggs, who graduated as a Purple Hurricane nearly a decade ago. “I noticed [that] even at the middle school. They cut the [Cartersville] middle school program, and when I heard about that happening, I just felt like there’s something that needed to be done about it.”

Hoping to change the direction of track and field in the county, Tiggs had the incentive he needed to create an Amateur Athletic Union team for Bartow.

Thus far, The Speed Factory has just a handful of members, but its coach understands the great possibilities ahead for a county not known for having a summer track program.
