Avian Brown of White, a 17-year-old rising senior at North Cobb Christian School, is bringing home the medallion as the third straight Bartow County Distinguished Young Woman to win the Georgia state title after winning the scholarship program competition Saturday evening. She will be representing the class of 2013 in national competition next June in Mobile, Ala.

Brown won three preliminary events: interview, talent (violin) and scholastics, and was the recipient of the grand prize of a $5,000 cash scholarship and an additional $300 for each preliminary win for a total haul of $5,900.

Avian is the daughter of Dr. Mason and Linda Brown of White.

In all, five Bartow County representatives have won over the years. Last year, Cartersville's Mary-Clayton Gilbert won the Georgia program and the year before Caroline Lloyd won. In 2009, Abbey Hufstetler took the title, and 51 years before that, in the first competition, Mary Jon Bradley (Garrison) won.

The competition was held in the Cobb Civic Center's Jennie T. Anderson Theater in Marietta.
