Detectives with the Adairsville Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence inside the city as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged child molestation.

According to a press release, the search of the residence yielded further evidence in the rape and molestation of a child under the age of 10.

Police Chief Robert Jones said John Alton Cox Jr. was arrested and charged with rape, aggravated child molestation, sexual battery, aggravated sodomy and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Jones said, "We will diligently investigate, pursue and prosecute those individuals who choose to prey upon our innocent children within our community."

Cox is currently incarcerated in the Bartow County Jail.

Conoco robbed, hole cut in wall

A Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputy was dispatched to the Conoco, 1914 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, early Tuesday morning. An alarm had gone off at the gas station and the store's owner stated he was watching the security footage and could see two people in the store.

When the deputy was about a minute away, the store owner said the power to the cameras and store itself had been shut off. When the deputy arrived at the store, according to the report, it did not have any power. Other deputies arrived at the scene and began to search for the suspects' point of entry.

As they went around the rear corner on the building's right, they saw several cases of beer and merchandise sitting on the ground. A hole was cut into the wall. The deputy had other officers cover the front of the store while he and a second deputy entered the store through the hole.

Once in the store they could hear something moving inside. They cleared the cooler and main area of the store, but did not find a suspect. When they tried to search the room behind the cash register the door would not open. The deputy believed it was locked. The door was forced open and three deputies began their search.

When they rounded a corner they came to a small bathroom whose door was open. All three deputies saw feet under the door and began shouting for the suspect to come out.

The suspect walked out with his hands in the air. According to the report he was wearing a red hat, a red-white-and-black bandanna over his face, a blue shirt, camo gloves, blue jeans and white tennis shoes. The deputies placed him into custody and when they patted him down they removed "large amounts" of money, one lighter and a cellphone, according to the report.

When the deputies tried talking with him, the suspect started shaking and said he was having chest pains. Emergency medical services were dispatched and arrived on scene. They treated the man, who was identified as Joseph Dion Crosby. He was taken to Cartersville Medical Center, followed by a deputy.

After the store's owner arrived at the scene the responding officers were able to see the store security footage. It showed a white man allegedly enter the store through the cooler before he started turning the cameras away from the store's interior. However, they did record him taking three sets of keys from behind the cash register and search through cabinets and drawers.

Crosby was charged with burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of tools during the commission of a crime and probation violation.
